Creating a Geodatabase

As you have read in this week’s reading, geodatabases are distinctly different than shapefiles and may hold particular advantages for the user. First, discuss the differences between geodatabases and shapefiles. Then, name and discuss at least two specific advantages that geodatabases have over single feature shapefiles and note at least one major drawback of geodatabases.

ESRI. (2016). Monitor real-time emergencies (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Retrieved from https://learn.arcgis.com/en/projects/monitor-real-time-emergencies/

In this this tutorial, students act as the GIS coordinator of an interagency task force. The objective is to coordinate response efforts of a city’s medical, crime, and fire departments. Previously, each department used its own method to track real-time emergencies throughout the city. Replacing these with a single, unified method will not only increase efficiency and improve resource allocation, but also prepare the departments for a coordinated response in case of a natural disaster like an earthquake. Students will explore an existing operation and then make one of their own. Skills reviewed support the week four learning objectives and include: create web maps, create operation views, and add customized operation views. There are four lessons ranging from 15 to 25 minutes each for a total estimated time of 1 hour and 20 minutes.

ESRI. (2016). Classify land cover to measure shrinking lakes (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..  Retrieved from https://learn.arcgis.com/en/projects/classify-land-cover-to-measure-shrinking-lakes/

Land cover analysis can be applied to a variety of socio-economic and environmental issues. It is a useful tool to show the change in area over time. In this tutorial, students will act as a geospatial scientist tasked with calculating the change in area of Lake Poyang in China between 1984 and 2014. Skills reviewed support the week four learning objectives, and include classifying land cover, calculating change in area. The estimate time to complete the two lessons is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
